Thoughts For New Amputees

If you are a new amputee, chances are that you may have a lot of questions.  These questions might come to you now all of the sudden after your amputation.  Things that you might not have even thought of before your surgery because your attention was needed elsewhere.  Now, after your surgery, it is very possible that you are probably starting to wonder what comes next.

So, what does come next after my amputation?

And, when do I get my new prosthetic leg, arm and/or hand?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg.  There is so much more to discuss with you.  We will help answer these questions and much more along our journey together here.  We think this short read and other posts on this site will be well worth your time.

Although this website cannot act as medical advice or act as a form of treatment for you, it does bring up several important topics.  This health information can help you understand the process more that amputees face in general.  Otherwise, you might find yourself searching around the internet and trying to piece all of this together from a lot of different sources. Not fun.

Will we cover everything? Probably not.  But we will cover plenty, much more than we have ever seen other people ever cover for a new amputee.

A Big Understatement

One truth that we can probably agree on is that you have just been through a lot in a short period of time.  (We could probably agree that this is anconsiderable understatement, actually.)  Perhaps the more accurate way to put it this is that you have been through a life altering experience.  As a result, it is quite possible that you are now discovering a whole new level of uncertainty in many areas of your life now. – This is totally natural.

Especially, if you are a first time amputee.  Someone who has never been through an amputation cannot compare it to their other life experiences.  How could you, right?  Nor do you probably know a lot of other amputees yet to consult with. – Thus motive to create this information.  – No, this is not a sales thing either.  Many prosthetic companies are out there and we are just one of the many.  So don’t worry we won’t ramp up the sales talk as we go.

Our main goal in this prosthetic portion of the website is to help you.  The truth here, as you probably started to see, is that we will not be sugar coat.  You do not have time for that.  Simply put, it is time to move forward and this information is coming to you from a person with a masters degree in prosthetics and orthotics.  I also own a prosthetics and orthotics practice and our team has helped many amputees who need prosthetic treatment.  – This is not about me though and you will rarely hear me talk about myself moving forward.

Just a quick clarification on prosthetics, in general.  When we refer to prosthetics and orthotics in this book, we are talking about prosthetic limbs and AFO walking aids (for example) to help people with gait abnormalities.   Orthotics can really help people not fall, which is a crisis around the world for older adults, but I digress.  – When we are talking about prosthetics here, in specific we are not referring to any prosthetics used for surgical reasons (like for a hip) or prosthetic eyes.  We thought we should clarify this upfront as we do not want to lead you astray.

This website is here to help you answer the commonly asked questions that you will be asking yourself if you just had an amputation.  The questions that will start arriving either right now or in the coming weeks, after your recent surgery.  Even the questions that you might not have even thought of yet.

Gratitude

We would like to quickly thank you in advance for reading the information on our site.  We appreciate being a resource to help you understand the road ahead. Do not worry, this is NOT a sales book where we are just going to constantly be plugging our service.  –  So, let’s get started.
